How Complete Denture Treatment Works

Consultation and examination
Your dentist asks about your history and examines your mouth, gums, jaws and any remaining teeth. Problems such as infection or gum disease may need attention first.
Treatment planning
Your options are discussed. If teeth need to be removed, time for healing may need to be allowed for.
Records
Impressions (moulds) of your gums and jaws are taken, along with a record of how your jaws come together.
Trial fitting
The teeth are usually tried in first, so fit, bite, appearance and speech can be checked before the final denture is made.
Fitting
The finished denture is checked for comfort, bite and stability, and you are shown how to insert, remove and clean it.

There is no standard timeline. Dentures are generally made over more than one visit, and the time depends on whether teeth need to be removed and healed first, how many records and trial fittings your case needs, and how many adjustments follow.

Most people need time to adapt, and experience varies. A new denture may feel bulky or unfamiliar, you may notice extra saliva, and mild pressure or sore spots can occur, especially early on. Some people gag more with an upper denture. A sore spot that persists should be checked.
Eating
Many people start with soft food in small pieces, chew slowly on both sides, and add firmer foods gradually. Chewing may not feel the same as with natural teeth, and some foods may stay difficult.
Speaking
Some words may sound different at first, and a slight lisp is common. Reading aloud and speaking regularly can help. If difficulty continues, tell your dentist.

How to Care for Complete Dentures
- Rinse after eating. Clean daily with a soft brush and a non-abrasive cleaner, holding the denture over a basin of water or a folded towel.
- Clean your gums, tongue, palate and any natural teeth too.
- Take dentures out at night unless your dentist advises otherwise, and keep them in water or a soaking solution as directed.
- Avoid hot water and harsh products. Do not repair or adjust a denture yourself.
- Keep up regular check-ups, even if you have no natural teeth.
Contact your dentist if a denture cracks, chips, feels loose or causes soreness that does not settle, or if a sore, lump or patch in your mouth has not healed within about two weeks. Seek urgent medical care for facial swelling with fever, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or if you think you may have swallowed or inhaled part of a denture.
How Long Do Dentures Last?
There is no fixed lifespan. It depends on how well the denture fits, how your gums and jaw change over time, wear, how it is cared for and how often it is reviewed. Gums and bone change after teeth are lost, so a denture may need adjustment, refitting or replacement at some point.
Looseness, sore spots, cracks, worn teeth or difficulty chewing are signs to have it checked.
